The army source told SaharaReporters that the incident took place at about 6:00a.m. at a checkpoint on Maiduguri Road in Kano where a combined team of Nigerian troops from the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army base and Directorate of State Security personnel intercepted the militants.
The leaders of the group were traveling from Maiduguri to Kano with a woman and three kids in a Honda "Hennesy" salon car, with Abuja registration number ABJ 620 AE, and they were stopped at the checkpoint in Mariri area.
It was there that the suspected commanders were reportedly killed in a gunfight as they attempted to escape from the checkpoint. The soldiers and the State Security Service (SSS) confirmed that they retrieved several gadgets that were used by the sect to communicate with several members in the Northern states.
The army source said one of the dead leaders is strongly believed to be the Boko Haram coordinator for Lokoja and Abuja cells of the group.
A woman and 3 children were arrested in the operation are currently being held by the SSS in Kano.
